Before you choose

Costly car insurance mistakes we fix

These only show up at claim time. An advisor checks for every one of them before recommending a plan.

Short payout on theft

Low IDV for a cheap premium

A lower insured value saves a little now and costs a lot after a total loss.

Up to 50% discount gone

Losing your no-claim bonus

A gap in renewal or a small claim can wipe out years of NCB.

Pay for parts yourself

Skipping zero-dep on a new car

Without it, depreciation on plastic, rubber and metal parts comes out of pocket.

Own damage not covered

Third-party only

It's legal, but it doesn't pay for damage to your own car.

What your advisor checks for you

  • IDV vs. market value
  • NCB carried over correctly
  • Add-ons you need (and don't)
  • Deductibles and depreciation
  • Cashless garages near you
  • Claim process and documents

Renewal premium went up?

Check whether the increase is normal before you pay.

Types of car insurance

Not sure which one you need? Our advisors will help you combine them the smart way.

Know what you're buying

What's covered, and what isn't

We explain the fine print before you buy, not after you claim.

Usually covered

  • Accidental damage to your car, including collisions and overturning
  • Theft of the car, paid out at its Insured Declared Value (IDV)
  • Fire, explosion and lightning
  • Floods, cyclones, storms, earthquakes and landslides
  • Riots, strikes and malicious damage
  • Third-party injury, death or property damage you're legally liable for
  • Personal accident cover for the owner-driver
  • Add-ons like zero depreciation, engine protection, roadside assistance and return to invoice

Usually not covered

  • Normal wear and tear, and mechanical or electrical breakdown
  • Driving without a valid licence, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Engine damage from driving through water, unless you have an engine-protection add-on
  • Depreciation on replaced parts, unless you have a zero-depreciation add-on
  • Using a private car for commercial purposes, like taxi or delivery work
  • Damage to your own car under a third-party-only policy

Coverage varies by insurer and plan. Always check the policy wording, we'll walk you through it.

The PolicyBench difference

How we help you, start to finish

01

Compare honestly

We put plans side by side on IDV, add-ons, deductibles and garage network, not just the premium.

02

Set the right IDV

Too low and theft or total-loss claims fall short; we help you pick a value that reflects your car.

03

Claim guidance

From intimation to survey to repair, we explain each step and help you deal with the insurer and garage.

04

Renew on time

Reminders before expiry so your no-claim bonus is protected and you never drive uninsured.

Claims made simple

How a claim works

Two ways to claim. Either way, our advisors guide you at every step.

Cashless claim

At a network garage

  1. 1Tell us or the insurer about the accident, file an FIR if there is theft or a third-party injury
  2. 2Take the car to a network garage; the insurer appoints a surveyor to inspect it
  3. 3Insurer approves the repair estimate; we track the approval and resolve queries
  4. 4Garage repairs the car and the insurer pays it directly, you pay only the deductible and any non-covered parts

Reimbursement claim

At any garage

  1. 1Inform the insurer before repairs start, so a surveyor can inspect the damage
  2. 2Get the car repaired at a garage of your choice and keep all bills and receipts
  3. 3Share documents with us, we check them for gaps and file the claim
  4. 4Approved amount is transferred to your bank account

FAQs

Car Insurance questions, answered

Is car insurance mandatory in India?

Yes. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every car on the road must have at least third-party insurance. Driving without it can lead to a fine of ₹2,000 for a first offence and ₹4,000 for a repeat offence, and/or imprisonment of up to three months.

Comprehensive or third-party: which should I buy?

Third-party cover only pays for damage you cause to others. A comprehensive policy also covers your own car against accidents, theft, fire and floods. For most cars, especially newer ones, comprehensive cover is the sensible choice.

What is IDV?

Insured Declared Value is the maximum the insurer will pay if your car is stolen or damaged beyond repair. It is roughly the car's current market value, the showroom price minus depreciation for its age.

What is a no-claim bonus (NCB)?

A discount on your own-damage premium for every claim-free year, rising from 20% to 50% over five years. The NCB belongs to you, not the car, so you can carry it to a new insurer or a new car.

Is zero depreciation worth it?

For cars up to about five years old, usually yes. Without it, the insurer deducts depreciation on plastic, rubber and metal parts, so you pay part of every repair bill yourself.

Can I switch insurers at renewal?

Yes. You can move to a new insurer at every renewal and keep your no-claim bonus. Renew before your policy expires to avoid a break in cover and a fresh inspection.

Should I claim for small damage?

Not always. A small claim can cost you your no-claim bonus, which may be worth more than the repair. Our advisors can help you work out whether a claim makes sense.

How is PolicyBench paid? Do I pay a fee?

You pay no fee to us. Our advisors are licensed insurance agents, and when you buy a policy through us the insurer pays us a commission set under IRDAI rules. For plans from insurers we are not appointed by, we still explain your options and you buy directly from that insurer.
